Is 6.5% enough?
Today, there was a leak in the Times that said the independent body who make recommendations on teacher pay has recommended a pay rise of 6.5% for teachers in England for September. Obviously, we don’t know all the details, and funding is a key issue, but is 6.5% enough to save education?
Anecdata, but I recently met up with some friends from my teacher training course. We’re close to hitting the 5 year mark- by which point 1/3 of teachers apparently quit. Except I’m going to be the only one out of five of us teaching in England in September, an attrition rate of 80%. And I don’t think that attrition rate is so unusual, any more.
Right now, on one of the main websites which schools use to advertise vacancies, there are over 12,000 teaching/education jobs being advertised in England. It’s very roughly one vacancy for every two schools. These vacancies won’t be evenly distributed between all schools, so there will be schools in September with huge staff shortages. It’s not an exaggeration to say education is in crisis.
If we got 6.5% (and if it were funded, ensuring all teachers could receive the pay rise), would it make any difference? It’s lower than inflation, after all, and many of the things that we regularly need to buy have gone up by more than inflation in the past year.
As a brief explanation, most teachers in England are paid according to one pay scale. People get a bit more in Inner/outer London and the surrounding areas, but otherwise there’s one set of pay for the whole country. All teachers progress from the starting point M1, to M6, usually at the rate of one pay point a year. The 6.5% would be added on to all of these paypoints.
6.5% would bring M1 (the starting pay point for most qualified teachers) very close to the original Tory promise of a £30,000 starting salary for teachers. At the top of the main pay scale- M6 (which is the point at the pay scale where this would have most impact) it would increase salaries by over £2000 to £41, 332. This would be noticeable in pay packets, enough to reduce people’s financial stresses- which can enable them to cope better with a stressful working environment.
I know some of you will say £40k is a lot, but bear in mind we are talking about a postgraduate qualified professional with at least 6 years of experience. For someone with a chemistry, physics or maths degree, that could be their starting salary in industry. It’s about equivalent to the average salary of a pharmacist. In a capitalist system, pay has to be competitive.
After M6, to increase your pay, you either need to get onto the “upper pay scale” or take on an extra responsibility payment known as a TLR. Getting on to the upper pay scale used to be relatively automatic, but now it’s much harder. It can certainly take people two or three years to progress from M6 to upper pay scale, and you’re expected to take on “whole school responsibilities” which can amount to a lot of extra work, with not that much of an increase in pay. Increasingly, in England, teacher pay is capped at M6, although there are a lot of older teachers who are on the upper pay scale, and sometimes, they find themselves getting pushed out because they are too expensive. If you move schools, there’s no guarantee of getting a UPS pay point at the new school.
TLRs are even worse in many ways. This is the way that people like heads of department and heads of year are paid. It’s a figure set by your school, within a national range, and there’s no consistency between schools. A Head of Science in one school may get £5000, whilst another only gets £3000. It’s worth noting that it’s also much harder to get a TLR in primary. Because TLRs are often the only way to increase your pay, a lot of people rush to take them on, sometimes in the second or third year of teaching. This often leads to burnout, because people take on massive responsibilities before they are ready, and the consequences can be damaging to everyone around them as well.
I do think 6.5% might be just enough to keep some people who are looking elsewhere from leaving. But the main reason people leave is often work related stress, often euphemistically called “workload”, which is largely being driven by the collapse in other services such as social services, the NHS and social care. “Workload” is also often made worse by being in a short staffed department, so it becomes a vicious cycle. I’ll write more about workload in another post.
However, the point is, the profession is on the brink of collapse. I really do believe that. I think the only way to save education would be to tempt a lot of the recent leavers back in. And 6.5% won’t be enough to do that. I don’t think 10% would be enough to do that. Without tackling the systemic problems within teaching, and without a pay system that really rewards classroom teachers doing the key, every day job that makes education functional, pay increases that don’t even match inflation aren’t enough.

WHO: Zarina Knightley and Quill Harker
SUMMARY: After his conversation with Karma, Quill talks to a different blonde from his past. AKA: Zarina has an entire conversation in Arabic with a former customer.
Tumblr media
Speaking with Karma had overall gone about as well as could be expected. Though QUILL had spotted another blonde he had wanted to speak with. Taking a seat next to her, he set his hands in his lap idly drumming his thumbs against his own hands. "You know I never took you for the maternal type," he said in Arabic, it was a lot smoother than when they were in college, "I do have to thank you for the suggestion, we did in fact gain many clients from that side of the world over the years." While she'd been an easy access for party drugs for his friends, he'd also found her opinions and suggestions tended to almost always be correct. Errors were usually on the listening parties fault rather than on her judgement even. "To be frank I was more surprised to see you're still alive. Though I do feel a little foolish having underestimated you like that."
Just because ZARINA was busy holding baby Jasmine did not mean that she was not paying attention to her surroundings. She had clocked Quill coming to sit next to her long before he actually did. As usual, seeing someone from her past appear in Huntsville was wholly unwelcome, but it was simply another thing she would have to handle. "I'm not," she replied, also in Arabic. It was effortless, as if she had been speaking the language every single day; even though it had, in fact, been almost two years since she had used it regularly. She adjusted Jasmine in her arms before looking over at him. "Your Arabic has improved significantly. It has no effect on my life personally, but I can appreciate when someone makes the correct decision to take my advice." She glanced back down at the baby in her arms. "By that, I assume you are referencing the fate of my parents. I do not blame you for your conclusions. It means only that the staging worked as intended."
QUILL was looking at the baby in her arms, an image he still found a bit difficult to wrap his head around. Then again it been almost two years, and he was now stuck in a town that he couldn't leave, the world was a strange place. He hummed before nodding his head, "I wouldn't say I mourned you but I did think it was unfortunate to lose someone of your capabilities. You left quite the vacancy, I had to find about 4 different sources for what you provided. The quality left much to be desired." His eyes flickered to the baby again when she started babbling giving a small wave with his fingers when she looked at him. "Speaking of, your role as a pharmacist is purely above board here I take it?"
A small, nearly imperceptible smile tugged at ZARINA's lips in response, but she kept her eyes on the baby. "Unfortunately, not everyone can be me," she replied coolly, despite the protective instinct she immediately felt when Jasmine squawked happily and waved back at him. It was one thing to have a former customer and acquaintance approach her. It was an entirely different thing to get her godchildren involved. She looked back up at him. "And yes, my role as a pharmacist is purely above board. I am, as you likely already know, married to a doctor." She paused. "You are unlikely to find the selection and quality you are accustomed to here in town. However, it would be prudent of you to befriend the younger crowd at the commune. Any product worth having tends to make its way there eventually."
QUILL huffed a laugh and shook his head, "Unfortunately," he agreed. He didn't know the full details of the family she's been linked to, had never searched for them. It was better for both their sakes really, it made the relationship they had in college a more favorable one. He let out a sigh, "I assumed as much, now to find 4 new sources to replace you again," there was a half hearted grin at the quip. If he's honest marriage is less surprising, he'd consider it once for them considering a partnership would have had benefits for both of them, there would have been no real love between them but that was a luxury he highly doubted he'd have ever had to begin with. "He's handsome, not a bad choice for someone to link yourself with in this town," he mused out loud giving her a brief nod at the suggestion, making a mental note to do so after the event.
ZARINA gave him a brief nod back. She had offered him the suggestion to be helpful, just as she had offered him genuinely good advice in the past; and just like back then, she had her own reasons for doing it. Not everything that she said or did had ulterior motives. But when speaking to people like Quill? It was rare that it didn't. "He is handsome," she agreed, readjusting her hold on baby Jasmine. "He is also intelligent, capable, and efficient, but that is not why I married him. I married him out of love." She returned her gaze to Quill. "I am glad to see that the years have not dulled your conversational skills. This has, as always, been an enlightening exchange. But I am done speaking to you now."
QUILL had felt someone's gaze on them and turned seeing the man in question, turning back to Zarina with raised brows, for a second he briefly wondered if she was making another joke. More than surprised by the sincerity of her tone, and making a vague noise of agreement. For most people finding out she was capable of something like that might have been reassuring, for him it just made him more hyperaware to be mindful of where their conversations went and what lines now existed compared to their prior lives. "Understood, enjoy the festivities, like you said this was enlightening," he agreed standing back up and not the least bit offended by being dismissed. It was something he'd always appreciated the directness, giving her a brief nod and waving once more to the small baby before taking his leave.

The Writer's Guild of America recently won minimum room sizes during their 2023 strike. That means that any union project is required to have a minimum number of writers working on it.
Nurses and Pharmacists are poised to strike over similar staffing concerns if they haven't already.
Get unionized; have the union to negociating your contract to call for minimum staffing requirements; below which the company pays both a penalty to the union and a bonus to you. Make taut staffing more expensive than attiquite staffing and watch how quick them vacancies fill up.
I wonder if work just.. got harder in the 2000s, comparatively.

With its strong oil industry and expanding sectors in finance, healthcare, education, and technology, Kuwait remains an attractive destination for expatriates seeking career advancement. For job seekers aiming to explore job vacancies in Kuwait, understanding the job market, key industries, and application requirements is essential to increase the chances of securing a desirable position.
Key Sectors with Job Opportunities in Kuwait
Oil and Gas Industry: As one of the world’s leading oil producers, Kuwait’s oil and gas sector offers significant job opportunities, particularly in engineering, project management, and technical positions. High demand exists for roles such as petroleum engineers, geoscientists, drilling operators, and environmental specialists. The industry often requires specialized skills and offers competitive salaries to qualified candidates.
Healthcare: Kuwait’s government is focused on expanding and modernizing its healthcare sector, leading to increased job openings for healthcare professionals. Medical doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory technicians, and support staff are highly sought after. With an emphasis on improving public health services, the country also offers openings in healthcare administration and management.
Education: The education sector in Kuwait is also expanding, with demand for qualified teachers and administrators in both public and private institutions. Teaching positions are available in primary, secondary, and higher education institutions, with specific needs for English teachers, STEM educators, and special education professionals. International schools often seek teachers with experience in international curriculums and provide competitive benefits.
Banking and Finance: Kuwait’s financial sector is robust, with numerous local and international banks operating in the country. Roles such as financial analysts, accountants, investment advisors, and compliance officers are frequently advertised. These positions often require candidates with degrees in finance, economics, or business management, along with relevant certifications or experience.
IT and Telecommunications: As Kuwait advances its digital infrastructure, there is a growing need for professionals in IT and telecommunications. Software developers, network engineers, cybersecurity specialists, and data analysts are in demand to support the digital transformation within various sectors.
Requirements for Working in Kuwait
To work in Kuwait, expatriates must secure a work visa, which requires a local employer to sponsor the visa application. Employers typically handle much of the visa application process, but job seekers should ensure they have valid passports, relevant educational documents, and health clearances. In most cases, employers also require applicants to undergo a medical examination.
Professional experience and educational qualifications are critical for most roles, especially in specialized fields. Many sectors, particularly healthcare and engineering, require candidates to hold licenses or certifications from recognized bodies. Additionally, knowledge of Arabic can be advantageous but is not essential, as English is commonly spoken in workplaces, especially within international organizations.
